Cooking

• When using a fridge, don’t leave the door open for longer than
necessary, as cold air will escape. Allow cooked food to cool before
placing it in the fridge. Check that door seals operate effectively. Try not
to site the fridge next to the cooker or boiler

• Use an appropriate sized oven to cook your meals, don’t heat up a large
oven, with only a small item in it. Choose a smaller oven or keep the oven
full when its on

• Dick Strawbridge gives at hint for cooking your Christmas roast dinner,
but it can be applicable for any meal, cooked in the oven. “Turn off the
oven about ten minutes before your turkey is due to be taken out. The
oven will remain hot for at least this amount of time. Normally, the oven
stays hot long after you whip out your turkey, which is just wasted energy.’

• Don’t overfill the kettle; heat the amount of water you really need

• Choose the right size pan for the food and cooker and keep the lids on
when cooking
